DESTROYED!
“Hussein Kamel, the highest-ranking Iraqi official ever to defect from Saddam Hussein’s inner circle, told CIA and British intelligence officers and U.N. inspectors in the summer of 1995 that after the gulf war, Iraq destroyed all its chemical and biological weapons stocks and the missiles to deliver them. KAMEL WAS SADDAM Hussein’s son-in-law and had direct knowledge of what he claimed: for 10 years he had run Iraq’s nuclear, chemical, biological and missile programs. Kamel told his Western interrogators that he hoped his revelations would trigger Saddam’s overthrow. But after six months in exile in Jordan, Kamel realized the United States would not support his dream of becoming Iraq’s ruler after Saddam’s demise. He chose to return to Iraq—where he was promptly killed. Kamel’s revelations about the destruction of Iraq’s WMD stocks were hushed up by the U.N. inspectors, sources say, for two reasons. Saddam did not know how much Kamel had revealed, and the inspectors hoped to bluff Saddam into disclosing still more. And Iraq has never shown the documentation to support Kamel’s story. Still, the defector’s tale raises questions about whether the WMD stockpiles attributed to Iraq still exist.” – MSN [Junkie: This story is running under “The Ugly” because the American press is not giving much “play” to the story and that is UGLY.”]
CLASS AMERICA
Commentator Lewis Lapham describes the American landscape as the kingdom of the rich and the wilderness of the poor. Will the current administration make things more egalitarian? Well, different sets of financial numbers show different kinds of inequalities at work in the U.S., but all, says Lapham , ‘testify to the emergence of a de facto class system grounded on the transfer of 80% of the country’s net worth to the richest 10 % of the citizenry.’” -- NPR [Junkie: this article is actually NPR audio. TW TRAILS
TW has been having trouble with the “facts” lately. Recall that when he was running for POTUS, TW had trouble with the facts then. “After George W. Bush became governor in 1995, the Houston Air National Guard unit he had served with during the Vietnam War years honored him for his work, noting that he flew an F-102 fighter-interceptor until his discharge in October 1973. And Bush himself, in his 1999 autobiography, ''A Charge to Keep,'' recounts the thrills of his pilot training, which he completed in June 1970. ‘'I continued flying with my unit for the next several years,’ the governor wrote. But both accounts are contradicted by copies of Bush's military records, obtained by the Globe. In his final 18 months of military service in 1972 and 1973, Bush did not fly at all. And for much of that time, Bush was all but unaccounted for: For a full year, there is no record that he showed up for the periodic drills required of part-time guardsmen.” – Boston
