LAMONT VERSUS LIEBERMAN:
THE PRIMARY THAT COULD SHAKE THE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
[Reprinted from Carmichael’s wonderful blog:
THE MOVING PLANET BLOG]
Ned Lamont's challenge to George Bush's favorite Democrat, Senator
Joe Lieberman, could shake the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC)
to its core and have vast political repercussions at the national
level.
Whatever the outcome, the Lamont-Lieberman clash will leave the DLC
with a palpable amount of damage.
Lamont is threatening to qualify for the primary ballot by garnering
a substantial proportion of the delegates to the state party's May
convention.
Paralleling his appeal to the party elite, Lamont is launching a
grassroots petition drive that needs only 1,500 signatures to place
his name on the August primary ballot.
Lieberman has a huge bankroll and lots of green stamps with
Connecticut corporate interests, but Lamont is a successful
businessman with credibility and resources of his own.
Local progressives are anxious to dump Lieberman whom they see as a
threat to the national Democratic ticket due to his compulsive
neoconservative Republican reflexes.
Lieberman's record of opposing Democratic initiatives and praising
neoconservative policies has galled the party faithful and much of
the American public.
His early criticism of Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky
investigation led some Party pundits to the conclusion that he was a
serious burden for Albert Gore's presidential campaign in 2000.
Planetary is supporting Lamont, and we urge others to support him as
well.
