JUNKIE
TPJ extends a Happy New Year to all. Our fervent hope for 2006 is peace.
2006 will be an exciting year politically as Democrats work to recapture majorities in both Houses of Congress, win Governorships and regain control in State Legislatures across the United States. TPJ will continue to provide coverage and views as we near our fourth anniversary of TPJ in March.
2005 exposed the fallacy of the radical Republican right. The war in Iraq grinds on; killing and maiming Americans and Iraqis while draining America’s resources. Republicans have driven America deeper into debt at an alarming rate; the average American is sustaining their standard of living by incurring greater personal debt, and the Republicans continue to ship American jobs overseas. By year’s end, Americans learned that Bush bypassed constitutional protections to launch secret surveillance of Americans on an unprecedented scale.
Republicans have put government on sale. Special interests are exercising influence over legislation with unprecedented temerity. They are lining their pockets while working Americans are losing ground.
Throughout 2005 public polling demonstrated one consistent theme. Americans want a change of direction. The question for Democrats is simple; will the Democratic Party become the Party that Americans can trust to lead that change.
If Democrats embrace new policy directions, the Democratic Party will reemerge. If the public perceives the Democrats has simply being another version of the ills that infect government, 2006 will be another disappointing election year and the radical Republican right will play on.
