RIGHT-LEANING
DEMOCRATIC POLLSTERS In yet another damning indictment of the core policy of Republican neoconservativism, the American people have come to the conclusion that the leading foreign policy and national security agendas of the Bush-Cheney administration are counterproductive. According to the most authoritative statistics now available, American voters hold that opinion by a wide margin - a margin that is destined to grow even wider. The latest analysis - conducted by World Public Opinion.org - is the most detailed study of the American electorate's attitudes to foreign policy and national security in the wake of the 2006 elections. This study disproves the long-standing counsel of Democracy Corps and many other "centrist" Democratic Party pollsters loyal to the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) that Americans viewed the neoconservative foreign policy and national security agenda led by the sole reliance of "hard power" that dominated the Bush Era in a positive light. For example, a doyen of the DLC, The Hon. Rahm Emanuel, (D-Illinois) served as Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and he routinely forbade many congressional candidates from speaking out against Bush's deeply unpopular war against Iraq with the threat of withholding campaign funds. This odd practice of Emanuel's was featured in Time Magazine and other publications. Emanuel is now facing a multitude of heavyweight Democrats who deem him to be blatantly incompetent - and that he is the principal reason that Democrats did not win more seats in the 110th Congress. A new Chair of the DCCC will be announced in January, and many are hoping that Emanuel will be retired from his position that has empowered him to appropriate funds to his pet Democratic Congressional candidates. Based on polling data compiled by Pew Opinion Research, the World Public Opinion.org analysis challenges the credibility of the vast majority of what goes for "professional polling" in the political consulting industry in the United States of America. It is time for many "professional" pollsters to go back to their drawing boards - and for many more to be retrained - or retired. If I were in position to advise any prospective candidate for public office in America, I would urge them to be very skeptical of any pollster who had ever worked for any member of the DLC or the RNC. Clearly, the Democratic National Committee and other parties and candidates should suspend contracts for polling with any of the ranking "center-right" pollsters who have toed the DLC line of support for a "muscular" foreign policy. Jeremy Rosner's recent essay, available on his website (see link below) is a case in point that clearly conflicts with the World Public Opinion.Org analysis. Rosner is a business partner of Stanley Greenberg, another pollster who has long advocated adherence to DLC principles. Less than two weeks ago, Rosner wrote: "Over the next two years, Democrats need to make several principles clear at every turn. First, whether measured in floor time or rhetoric, we place as much emphasis on national security as domestic priorities. Second, we offer a broad program for fighting terror and strengthening our security that goes beyond opposition to Bush’s policies in Iraq. Third, we have a long-term commitment to rebuilding our over-stretched military, caring for this war’s veterans, and creating stronger relations with the military leadership. Fourth, despite the costs and setbacks in Iraq, we remain committed to an outward-looking and idealistic foreign policy that promotes the expansion of democracy, human rights, global environmental quality, trade, and economic opportunity for the world’s poorest citizens." Today, in the wake of the latest surveys, Rosner should certainly consider his future in professional political consulting. Rosner is a co-author of With All Our Might, A Progressive (sic) Strategy for defeating Jihadism and defending Liberty - a DLC textbook that advocates a formidable, muscular and aggressive national security agenda led by a neoconservative-heavy US military juggernaut that is fueled by a visceral Islamophobia. Majorities See World More Fearful of
U.S. Military Force,
Asked whether countries around the world
have grown more afraid in recent years that the United States might use
force against them, a majority of respondents (63%) say yes. The poll
then asks respondents whether, if the leaders of some countries grow
more afraid of the United States, this is good for U.S. security,
because it makes foreign governments “more likely to refrain from doing
things the U.S. does not want them to do,” or bad because it makes them
“seek out new means of protecting themselves.”
The poll also asks respondents whether,
“if leaders of some countries grow more afraid” of an attack by the
United States, this will tend to increase or decrease the likelihood
that they will “try to acquire weapons of mass destruction.” A very
large majority (80%) say that countries will become more likely to seek
WMD.
A large majority does not think the
United States should announce it is pursuing regime change in problem
countries, such as Iran.
Majorities instead agree with arguments
in favor of talking to problem countries “because isolating them often
provokes them to increase the behavior the US opposes” (82%) and
“because communication increases the chance of finding a mutually
agreeable solution” (84%). __________________ Michael Carmichael has been a professional public affairs consultant, author and broadcaster since 1968.
