archived: 23 - 29 Oct, 2005 Back Next NC BUSH TPJ readers are encouraged to read Bush’s national polling numbers in THEM DEMS today. Readers will notice that Survey USA’s results indicate that Bush has suffered a precipitous drop in support in North Carolina.
In the four months between May and September, Bush’s the spread between Bush’s approval/disapproval ratings dropped -4%, while in the spread dropped another -10% in the one month between September and October. Today, TPJ takes a deeper look into what is occurring. First, between June and October, Bush’s approval rating dropped -6% among women while his disapproval rating increased +10% among women. The movement among men was much smaller.
Age also seems to be a major factor in Bush’s declining support. Bush’s support among those 35-54 has dropped by -7%, double the rate of drop in any other age group, and his disapproval rating has climbed +9% in the 35-54 age group, more than double those 55+.
The shift is also evident in the white community as compared to any other racial group. Bush’s approval rating is down -5% among whites while is disapproval rating is up +8%. Black support is identical comparing the two months. Hispanic approval and disapproval shows distinct changes away from Bush, but note that Hispanics account for only 4% of the polling population.
Bush’s loss of support has remained constant among Democrats and Bush’s approval among Republicans has remained constant. The changes in Bush’s numbers have come from an increase in Republicans who “disapprove” of his leadership, an increase of +4%, and slight shifts in independents; approve -2% and disapprove +3%.
It is very important to note that the number of Republicans surveyed in October was 6% less than in June and independents rose +6%. The disparity accounts for some of Bush’s falling numbers in North Carolina. For example, exit polls from the 2004 general election suggest that the Survey USA polling distribution in June 2005 more clearly reflects patterns of Party votes in North Carolina, 39% Democrat, 40% Republican and 21% Independent
