archived: 20 - 26 Feb, 2005 Back Next UPDATED: February 21, 2005 THE IRAN WAR Seymour Hersh and Scott Ritter have reported that the US planning for the Iran War is reaching a very advanced stage. George Bush has already approved a June launch when the bombing will target strategic sites inside Iran. Support for the Iran War is now actively being sought among the Democratic members of the US Congress. The ostensible objective will be the destruction of Iran’s alleged program to develop nuclear weapons, but the actual aim is to bring about regime change with the installation of a US puppet in Tehran. Seymour Hersh has already published a report on the military planning for the Iran War. According to Hersh’s paper, The Coming Wars, not only has the US been conducting top secret commando missions inside Iran since last summer, but the Defense Department is now revising military plans for a maximum ground and air invasion of the oil-rich nation. Douglas Feith is the head of the planning unit in Washington. Feith and his team are now working with Israeli experts to refine the strategic architecture of the US plans. Additionally, strategists based at US Central Command in Tampa, Florida are in the process of developing a much more richly detailed tactical outline for the Iran War. With a new Chair just elected to head the Democratic National Committee (DNC), political advisors to Bush are hoping to catch the opposition off guard and in the midst of reorganization. The new Chair, Howard Dean, is deemed to be an easy target for the Republican mantra, “The Democrats are weak on defense and national security,” and Karl Rove is predicting a substantial shift in public support for the expansion of their wars. Critics say that the nascent Iranian nuclear program is peaceful, and the real objective of the coming Iran War is to control the world’s richest oil and energy reserves. Domestically, I predict that there will be substantial opposition to The Iran War. It should go without saying that Bush's next oil war will not be popular in Europe, Asia, Africa or Latin America. The challenge facing the Democratic Party is real. There are already Democratic supporters for The Iran War in Congress. Dean's challenge will be to maintain some semblance of unity between the grass roots and the much more conservative Congressional delegations. Senator Joe Lieberman's role will almost certainly be divisive. It remains to be seen whether Senator Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, the Minority Leaders, will cooperate or contradict the large proportion of their own support that will oppose the Iran War. Ritter and other US activists are making plans to stage public protests in advance of the launch of the Iran War this June. __________________ Since 1968, Michael Carmichael has been a professional political consultant.
